NMC is excited to present this In-service workshop to the community. Beneficial for everyone from novices to expert mediators, please join us! While the primary focus is toward the client’s trauma response, there is also pertinent information regarding the regulation and identification of our own trauma responses. This information can also be applied in many areas of life outside of mediation.

Learning Objectives

• Define Trauma and how it relates to clients

• Recognize possible indicators of a trauma response

• Learn types of trauma responses and how to identify them

• Practice techniques to prevent and/or de-escalate a trauma response

For Mediators

• Learn how to recognize when we have been personally triggered and are experiencing a trauma

• Learn how to regulate our own nervous system in response to being triggered

• Hear anecdotes of lived experience relating to the window of tolerance

About our Workshop Leader:

Wendy Westergard, MA, MSC, LMFT, LCADC is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist as well as Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism, a master’s degree in speech communication and a master’s degree in marriage, child and family therapy. She has extensive training and experience in trauma-informed treatment, including guided imagery, EMDR and most extensively Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP), which is a neurobiological approach to treating affect dysregulation, survival defenses, trauma memories, developmental wounds and attachment injuries.

Wendy delights in witnessing people truly heal from tragedy, feel safe in their bodies, and embrace relationships. Her private practice is in Reno, where she treats families, couples, and individuals of all ages. Wendy is a former board member of the Nevada State Board of Examiners for Marriage and Family Therapists and Clinical Professional Counselors.

Prior to her therapy career, Wendy taught Speech Communication at the University of Nevada, Reno. Today she brings that education full circle by giving presentations to a variety of professionals. Most recently, Wendy pursues her passion for peace through mediation. She participated in training through the Mediator Training Center and is currently serving as a Mentee for the Neighborhood Mediation Center.
